The International Beagle Hare Futurity (IBHF)
evolved into existence in 1974. The object of the
IBHF is to encourage the improvement of the
beagle breed. The idea came about when a
group of New York and Vermont beaglers were
assembled at a meeting and began discussing
ways that the breeders, not just the owners,
could gain more recognition.
The IBHF was off to a good start but as with
anything, there were growing pains.
Adjustments of the IBHF have been made over
the years to help gain acceptance of the
organization from Beagle breeders and owners
throughout the United States and Canada.
As the IBHF became a reality, it rotated from
one club to another. The first trial was held in
Spacetown, NH, then No. Hampton-Russel, MA -
Vermont B.C., VT - Salmon Falls, ME -
Cornwall, Ont. Canada. These trials varied in
numbers, Summer or Fall, and in 1982 the
governing board felt the IBHF should have a
permanent home. The IBHF had grown from 12
starters in 1978. Vermont Beagle Club was
chosen because it was the most centrally located
with adequate facilities.
Since then it has grown into The Event of the
Year - some compare it with the Kentucky
Derby or the World Series. Futurity Trials have
often enjoyed over 200 starters for the weekend
event. The Futurity is alternated between Clubs.
If your Club is interested in hosting The
Futurity, please feel free to contact us. You do
not need to be a member of any LPH club or
association to register a litter with the Futurity,
or enter a Futurity registered hound in the
annual Futurity Trial.
